“Count Me Out” was written by Jeanne Pruett — the country singer-songwriter later known for her own hit “Satin Sheets” — and was first recorded by Marty Robbins, who released it as a single in 1966.
The lyric is a quietly bitter farewell: the singer, done with a love that has worn him out, asking simply to be counted out of it. Its understated resignation set it apart from more melodramatic heartbreak songs.
The Del McCoury Band recorded “Count Me Out” on their 2001 album Del and the Boys. McCoury had a long habit of finding strong, lesser-known country songs and giving them a hard, high-lonesome bluegrass treatment, and this was a characteristic choice.
