Diesel on My Tail

Jim & Jesse

Album · 1967 · Epic BN 26314

Diesel on My Tail is a 1967 album by Jim and Jesse McReynolds—the Virginia Mountain mandolin-and-guitar duo who had been Grand Ole Opry members since 1964—released on Epic Records (BN 26314). Produced by Billy Sherrill at Columbia Studio in Nashville, the album wraps the McReynolds brothers' traditional close-harmony sound in a countrypolitan rhythm section assembled to chase the trucking-song craze of the mid-1960s: Jesse McReynolds (mandolin), Jim McReynolds (guitar, tenor vocals), Bobby Thompson (dobro), steel guitarist Lloyd Green, pianist Larry Butler, bassist Roy Huskey, and drummer Buddy Harman. The title track climbed to number eighteen on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, the duo's highest-charting single. "Six Days on the Road," "Truck Drivin' Man," and "Ballad of Thunder Road" anchor a set in which Jesse's cross-picking mandolin keeps one foot firmly in bluegrass.
