Direct from Chicago is a live album by the Henhouse Prowlers, recorded in January 2012 at the Abbey Pub in Chicago and released that year as a self-issued CD. The band, formed in the city’s Rogers Park neighborhood in 2004, appears here as Ben Wright on banjo, Jon Goldfine on bass, Dan Andree on fiddle, Grant Ziolkowski on mandolin and Starr Moss on guitar, with Andree, Goldfine, Wright and Ziolkowski singing.
The fourteen tracks mix the band’s own songs with older material. James Weigel, who played resonator guitar on the band’s first album, wrote “Caroline,” “Ain’t It a Shame” and “Syracuse,” and Goldfine wrote “Soul Saver” and “Slippery When Wet.” The covers include “Sunny Side of the Mountain,” Jimmie Skinner’s “Don’t Give Your Heart to a Rambler,” Mickey Newbury’s “Why You Been Gone So Long,” Guy Clark’s “Homegrown Tomatoes,” Lester Flatt’s “Rollin’ in My Sweet Baby’s Arms,” and the instrumentals “Silver Eagle,” “Sledd Ridin’,” “Fireball” and John Hartford’s “Category Stomp.”
