Down on the River was released in 1989 on Flying Fish (FF 514) under the names John Hartford and the Hartford String Band. John Hartford wrote all eleven songs, and the album was recorded at the Cowboy Arms Hotel & Recording Spa in Nashville. Hartford and Mark Howard are credited as co-producers, with Jack Clement as executive producer.

Hartford plays banjo and fiddle. Mark Howard plays guitar, Ruth McGinnis, Holly O’Dell and John Yudkin are on fiddle, Roy Huskey Jr. is on bass and Kenny Malone on percussion. Vocal credits also name Benny Martin, Curly Seckler, Chris and Dale Ballinger and Margaret Archer. The songs include “Here I Am in Love Again,” “I Wish We Had Our Time Again,” “Delta Queen Waltz,” “Old Time River Man,” “Men All Want to Be Hoboes,” “Right in the Middle of Falling for You” and “General Jackson.” The back-cover band photograph was taken at the 1988 Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
