Down on the River finds John Hartford in a characteristically riverine mood, the 1989 album extending his lifelong preoccupation with the Mississippi River, steamboat culture, and the vanishing world of nineteenth-century American water commerce. By this point Hartford had become something of a national treasure within acoustic music circles — a brilliant eccentric whose recordings constituted a sustained act of cultural archaeology as much as musical entertainment. His fiddle playing, fingerpicking guitar, and self-accompanied clogging over an amplified board were as much theatrical as musical in live performance, and even in the studio his recordings carried an air of personalized ceremony.
