Drawing from the Well (Webco WEB 0153) is a 1996 album by the Reno Brothers, the sons of banjoist Don Reno, who had died in 1984. Ronnie Reno plays guitar, Don Wayne Reno banjo and Dale Reno mandolin, with Don Wayne singing tenor and Dale baritone. Sam Bush plays fiddle throughout, Steve Wilson dobro and Billy Rose bass.
Much of the material goes back to their father’s partnership with Red Smiley. Reno and Smiley and the Tennessee Cutups made the first recording of “Maybe You Will Change Your Mind” in January 1952. They first recorded “Trail of Sorrow” and the instrumental “Charlotte Breakdown” in November 1954, and “I’m Using My Bible for a Roadmap,” which closes the album, was one of their hits.
Ronnie Reno sings lead on “Cruel Love” and “A Pretty Wreath for Mother’s Grave,” and guest singers take the other eight vocals. Ronnie Bowman sings “Unwanted Love” and “Talk of the Town.” Russell Moore sings “Please Remember That I Love You” and “Maybe You Will Change Your Mind,” with Ray Deaton adding a tenor part. Suzanne Cox, with Sidney Cox on baritone, sings “No Longer a Sweetheart of Mine” and the closing number. Ronnie McCoury sings “There’s Another Baby,” and David Parmley sings “Trail of Sorrow.” Jason Carter joins Bush on fiddle for three tracks, and on “Banjo Riff” Rob McCoury and Scott Vestal play banjo alongside Don Wayne Reno.
