The Early Recordings of Jim & Jesse McReynolds with Larry Roll (Gateway Records 38121/2, 1978) is a ten-track gospel album of recordings made in Cincinnati in 1951, when the brothers billed themselves as "The Virginia Trio," released twenty-seven years later on the Ohio-based Gateway label. Jim McReynolds plays guitar and sings; Jesse McReynolds plays mandolin and sings; Larry Roll plays guitar and sings; and Dave Woolum holds the bass. The all-gospel program — including "I'll Fly Away," "Just a Little Talk with Jesus," and "Camping in Canaan's Land" — documents Jim and Jesse at the very outset of their professional recording career, before the Capitol Records partnership that made them one of bluegrass's most commercially successful acts. Jesse's split-string cross-picking mandolin technique was already fully present in these earliest sessions.
