Erase the Miles (Rebel REB-CD-7509) was released on 20 January 2004 in Rebel’s Vault Masters series. It gathers thirteen tracks from the three albums IIIrd Tyme Out made for Rebel: the 1991 debut, Puttin’ New Roots Down (1992) and Grandpa’s Mandolin (1993). The band was formed in Cumming, Georgia, in 1991 by Russell Moore, who had left Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, with Mike Hartgrove, Ray Deaton, Terry Baucom and Alan Bibey.
Five tracks come from the debut: “Moundsville Pen,” “Erase the Miles,” “Woman Dressed in Scarlet,” “When He Reached Down His Hand for Me” and “Thanks a Lot.” Three come from Puttin’ New Roots Down: “No End to Heaven,” “Your Love for Me” and “When I Cross Over Jordan.” Five come from Grandpa’s Mandolin: “Count Every Tear Drop I Cry,” “Little Black Train,” “Grandpa’s Mandolin,” “I’ve Waited as Long as I Can” and “Dixie Train.”
Russell Moore (guitar, lead vocals), Mike Hartgrove (fiddle) and Ray Deaton (electric bass, vocals) are on all three source albums. Terry Baucom (banjo) and Alan Bibey (mandolin) play on the tracks from the first two albums; on the Grandpa’s Mandolin tracks the banjo is Barry Abernathy and the mandolin Wayne Benson. Kenny Malone adds percussion on “Grandpa’s Mandolin.” The band went on to win the IBMA Vocal Group of the Year award in each year from 1994 to 2000.
