Euphoria was Leftover Salmon’s first album for Hollywood Records, released on 18 March 1997 (HM-62095-2). The Boulder, Colorado, band had formed in 1989. The album was recorded at Kerr-Macy Studios in Denver and produced, engineered and mixed by Justin Niebank, who shares the arranging credit with the band.

The five members were Drew Emmitt on mandolin, electric guitar and vocals, Vince Herman on acoustic guitar, rubboard and vocals, Mark Vann on acoustic and electric banjo and vocals, Tye North on bass and vocals, and Michael Wooten on drums and percussion. Sam Bush adds fiddle to “Highway Song” and the instrumental “Funky Mountain Fogdown.” Pete Sears plays piano, electric piano and Hammond organ on “River’s Rising” and “This Is the Time,” with Jeremy Lawton also on electric piano on “River’s Rising.” Sally Van Meter plays lap steel on “Muddy Water Home.”

Emmitt wrote most of the eleven songs. Herman wrote “Better” and “Mama Boulet,” and Vann wrote “Funky Mountain Fogdown.” The band also covers the Louvin Brothers’ “Cash on the Barrelhead,” the traditional “Ain’t Gonna Work” and Robin Remaily’s “Euphoria,” which gives the album its title. The band toured with the 1997 H.O.R.D.E. festival in support of the album, which reached number three on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart for the Mountain region.
