Fair Weather (Compass 7 4292-2, 2008) is a solo album from Claire Lynch, the Alabama-born singer and songwriter whose clear, expressive soprano has made her one of the most admired vocalists in contemporary bluegrass. The ensemble assembled for the record is exceptional: Tim O'Brien, David Grier on guitar, Matt Flinner on mandolin, Alison Brown on banjo, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, and Missy Raines on bass. The album presents Lynch's songwriting alongside well-chosen covers in arrangements that foreground her voice while fully deploying the considerable instrumental resources of the assembled cast. Lynch had developed her solo career on Compass following years as leader of the Front Porch String Band, and Fair Weather represents a mature statement from one of the genre's most consistently musical and thoughtful practitioners — a recording that established her solo work's full artistic weight.
