Alison Brown is one of the most inventive five-string banjoists of the modern era — a Grammy winner, the first woman ever to take home an IBMA instrumental award, and co-founder of Compass Records, the Nashville label she built with her husband, bassist Garry West. Equally at home in bluegrass, jazz, and Celtic settings, she has shaped the music as a player, composer, producer, and executive for over three decades.

  • Born August 7, 1962, in Hartford, Connecticut, she took up guitar at eight and banjo at ten. Her family moved to La Jolla, California, when she was eleven, landing her in the Southern California bluegrass scene.
