Fiddle and a Song was released by Sugar Hill in 1995 (SHCD-3838 on CD, SHC-3838 on cassette). Byron Berline plays fiddle on every track, and the supporting players change from one piece to the next. On “Sally Goodin,” the opening track, he is joined by Earl Scruggs on banjo, Bill Monroe on mandolin, Randy Scruggs on guitar and James Monroe on bass. Vince Gill sings lead and plays guitar on “Rose of Old Kentucky” and “Sweet Memory Waltz,” with Dennis Caplinger on banjo, John Moore on mandolin and Bill Bryson on bass.

“Faded Love” has Dan Crary on guitar, John Moore on mandolin, Jay Dee Maness on steel guitar and Steve Spurgin on bass and lead vocal. Mason Williams sings lead on “Skippin’ Along on Top,” with Hal Blaine on drums, and Lindy Rasmusson takes the lead on “Roly Poly.” The album closes with “Were You There?,” with Bette Berline and Ella Rose Halloran on piano and Ellie Doud and Bette Berline singing.

The album was nominated for Best Bluegrass Album at the 38th Annual Grammy Awards, and “Sally Goodin,” with Berline, Monroe and Scruggs, was nominated for Best Country Instrumental Performance. Berline, who won the National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest in Weiser, Idaho, in 1965, was also a founding member of the band California with Dan Crary and John Hickman.
