Hawktail

Album · 2020 · Padiddle PDD-CD 002

Formations (Padiddle Records PDD-002) was released on 10 January 2020 and is the second album by Hawktail, the instrumental quartet of fiddler Brittany Haas, mandolinist Dominick Leslie, guitarist Jordan Tice and bassist Paul Kowert. It followed the group’s debut, Unless (2018), by just over a year. Hawktail and Chris Eldridge produced it, Jacquire King mixed it, and it came out on CD, vinyl and digital formats.

The seven tracks are “Annbjørg,” “Last One on the Line,” “Dandelion,” “The Tobogganist,” “Eddie’s Attic,” “Padiddle” and “One Hour in Hungary,” the longest at nearly seven minutes. The label describes the music as constructions of elemental components that stretch past what the instrumentation suggests, with strains of the American South and the North Atlantic.
