From the Heart and Soul (Rural Rhythm RHY-CD 1038) is a studio album from J.D. Crowe and the New South, the Lexington, Kentucky ensemble that Crowe built into one of traditional bluegrass's most respected and consistently evolving acts after his years with Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys, presenting the ensemble in the direct Kentucky hard-driving style that Crowe's banjo defines. Crowe plays banjo; Don Rigsby plays mandolin and sings; Ricky Wasson plays guitar and sings lead; Ron Stewart plays fiddle; and Harold Nixon holds the bass. Rural Rhythm provided a recording home for the New South during a period when Crowe's ensemble was maintaining the exacting technical standards and traditional repertoire that had made their 1970s Rounder recordings landmark documents in the history of acoustic bluegrass.
