"Front Porch String Band," originally released in 1981 on Leather Records (LBG-8102) and reissued on Rebel Records (REB-1624) in 1983, is the debut album of the Alabama-based progressive bluegrass ensemble centered on Claire Lynch (guitar, vocals), Larry Lynch (mandolin, bouzouki), Allen Watkins (banjo), and Terry Campbell (bass). The record introduced Claire Lynch to national bluegrass audiences, showcasing the pure, Appalachian-inflected soprano that would define her career over the following four decades. Rebel Records was the era's premier traditional bluegrass label, and the reissue brought the Front Porch String Band to a much wider audience than the original Leather pressing had reached. The album is considered a touchstone of early progressive bluegrass and the origin document of one of the genre's most distinctive vocal careers.
