“Front Porch String Band” was first issued in 1981 on Leather Records (LBG-8102), the group’s first national recording, and reissued on Rebel Records (REB-1624) in 1983. Claire Lynch, who had moved to Huntsville, Alabama, at the age of 12, had joined a band called Hickory Wind, which later changed its name to the Front Porch String Band. The album was recorded at Small World Recording in Huntsville and credits Claire Lynch on guitar and lead vocals, Larry Lynch on mandolin, fiddle and guitar, Allen Watkins on banjo and Terry Campbell on bass, with all four singing. Ed Dye plays double bass on “The Singer” and bones on “Grant’s Mill,” and Tom Gordon plays drums on “Hills of Alabam’.”

The Rebel issue lists Hershey Reeves and Larry Lynch as producers. The twelve tracks include J. J. Cale’s “If You’re Ever in Oklahoma,” J. D. Souther’s “Hearts Against the Wind,” Gordon Lightfoot’s “Go My Way” and A. P. Carter’s “Wabash Cannonball,” with originals by the band: Claire Lynch’s “Come Unto Me,” Larry Lynch’s instrumental “Grant’s Mill” and “Hills of Alabam’,” written by Claire Lynch and M. Fair.
