Album · 2024 · Free Dirt Records DIRT-CD-0122

Gold in Your Pocket is a 2024 album by Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms, released on Free Dirt Records (DIRT-CD-0122). Klauder, a mandolin player and singer, was a founding member of the Foghorn Stringband, and Willms, who plays guitar and sings, joined him in it. They live in the San Juan Islands of Washington and are described by their label as longtime leaders of the Pacific Northwest country scene. The album has thirteen tracks, most of them originals by Klauder and Willms, with a few covers, among them Dean Johnson’s “Faraway Skies” and Paul Burch’s “Last of My Kind,” which Willms sings.

It was the first time they had recorded outside Portland and the first time they had made a record over several sessions and studios. The first sessions were at the Tractor Shed in Nashville, where the engineer was Mark Howard, a contact of the bassist Mike Bub. Chris Scruggs came in to play and to offer a co-producer’s ear. About nine months later they finished the record at Joel Savoy’s studio, Valcour Records, in Eunice, Louisiana. Klauder has said that working with an all-star band let him relax and trust everybody in the producer role. Rusty Blake’s pedal steel and Savoy’s fiddle can be heard on “All About Love.”
