“Last of My Kind” was written by Paul Burch, who recorded it in 2001 as the title song of an album. The record was inspired by Tony Earley’s novel “Jim the Boy” and was the first in a series of what Burch called folk operas.
The song is a quiet reckoning with being left behind by time. The singer comes to realize that he is the last of his kind — that the world and the way of life he knew are passing, and that he stands among the last who remember them.
The song was later recorded by Caleb Klauder and Reeb Williams. The version heard here is by Caleb Klauder and Reeb Williams.
