Last of My Kind cover

Last of My Kind (Merge MRG196, 2001) is Paul Burch’s album of songs inspired by Tony Earley’s novel Jim the Boy. The credits read “Produced, performed and recorded” by Burch at home in East Nashville, Tennessee, in 2000, with mastering by Jim DeMain at Yes Master. Burch wrote all thirteen songs, and he and Earley each contributed notes to the package.

The Independent Weekly of Durham described the songs as a musical counterpoint to the novel, with its characters singing of their experiences. The track list includes “Aliceville Rag,” “Harvey Hartsell’s Farm,” “Mama Shoo’d the Blackbirds,” “Sun Don’t Shine,” “Polio,” “Amos’s Blues” and the title song.
