Good ’n Country was released by Decca in May 1960 (DL 4016) as a Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys album. Its twelve tracks were not cut at one time. Most come from sessions at Bradley Studio in Nashville on 20 November 1958 and 14 January 1960, with others from 1956 and February 1958.
The 1958–60 recordings feature Martin on guitar and lead vocal, J.D. Crowe on banjo and Paul Williams on mandolin; the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame dates Williams’s arrival in the band to 1958. Williams sings tenor and Crowe baritone on several of the vocals. Chubby Wise plays fiddle on the November 1958 session, which produced “Hold Whatcha Got,” “Night,” “It’s Not Like Home,” “Cripple Creek” and the instrumental “Bear Tracks,” credited to Martin and Crowe. Benny Martin plays fiddle and Junior Huskey bass on the January 1960 session, with Buddy Harman on drums; it gave “You Don’t Know My Mind,” “Who’ll Sing for Me,” “Homesick” and “All the Good Times Are Past and Gone.”
The two earliest tracks are from a different band. “Before the Sun Goes Down” (May 1956) has Porky Hutchins on banjo, Earl Taylor on mandolin and Tommy Vaden on fiddle. “Grand Ole Opry Song,” written by Hylo Brown, was cut in December 1956 with Crowe on banjo, Taylor on mandolin and Gordon Terry on fiddle.
