Gospel Songs Bluegrass Style (Philips Records PHM 200-083) is a studio album from the Barrier family, the Tennessee-based traditional performers who presented Appalachian gospel material in the family ensemble format that had sustained religious music across the mountain South since before the commercial recording era. Ernest Barrier plays guitar and sings; Henry Ray Barrier sings and plays; Herman Barrier sings and plays; and Gene Dykes contributes additional instrumental work. Philips Records' documentation of the Barrier family represents one of the major commercial labels' occasional engagement with the traditional family gospel ensemble, recording the sacred material in the direct, unvarnished setting that the family performance tradition demands. The program draws from the shape-note hymnal and Appalachian devotional repertoire that such ensembles had sustained through generations of community performance.
