Hardcore Bluegrass in the Dawg House by Del McCoury and David Grisman, released on Acoustic Disc in 2012, pairs two musicians whose careers have traced complementary arcs — McCoury as the keeper of hard-core traditional bluegrass, Grisman as the genre's most prominent expandor and synthesizer. The collaboration might seem unlikely, but both men share roots in 1960s East Coast bluegrass and a shared reverence for the music's foundational materials. The album moves between Monroe classics, Stanley repertoire, and other traditional pieces with relaxed authority, the instrumental virtuosity on both sides kept in service of the songs rather than deployed for its own sake. It is a meeting of equals conducted with evident mutual respect.
