Heart Songs: The Old Time Country Songs of Utah Phillips, released in 1997 on Rounder (11661 0424 2), is Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin's tribute to labor-folk troubadour Bruce "Utah" Phillips. Stecher produced the record; it was tracked in March 1997 at Bay Records in Berkeley with engineer Bob Shumaker. Stecher (vocals/guitar/mandolin) and Brislin (vocals/guitar) work spare old-time country duets with close brother-and-sister-style harmonies, treating Phillips's songbook as traditional repertoire. The album is the first record devoted entirely to Phillips's songs, drawn from a catalog the songwriter himself rarely committed to studio settings. The duo's approach reframes Phillips as a song author worthy of the same archival reverence usually reserved for the Carter Family or A.P. Carter.
