Hell Among the Yearlings is Gillian Welch’s second album. Almo Sounds released it on 28 July 1998 (AMSD-80021), with T Bone Burnett as producer. The disc’s notes list five studios: Sound City in Van Nuys, Sound Emporium and Nevada in Nashville, Ocean Way in Hollywood and MCA Music Studio in Nashville. Welch and David Rawlings are credited with all eleven songs, and they are the only players on most of the record: both sing and play acoustic guitar, and Welch switches to banjo on “The Devil Had a Hold of Me,” “One Morning” and “Rock of Ages.”

Two tracks add other instruments. On “Honey Now” Welch plays acoustic guitar, bass and kick drum while Rawlings plays electric guitar and snare drum, and on “Whiskey Girl” Rawlings plays electric guitar and Burnett plays piano and Hammond B3 organ. The songs include “Caleb Meyer,” “My Morphine,” “Miner’s Refrain,” “I’m Not Afraid to Die” and “Winter’s Come and Gone.” In 2001 the album was reissued on Acony Records (ACNY-0102), the label owned by Welch and Rawlings.
