Gillian Welch
Gillian Welch's catalog is inseparable from longtime musical partner David Rawlings — nine studio albums released across both names, built on spare two-guitar arrangements, close harmony, and original songs that sound like they were unearthed rather than written. The duo's work defines a strain of modern acoustic music that draws on Appalachian ballad, Carter Family, Stanley Brothers, and pre-war country blues without recreating any of them directly.
- Before her debut, Tim and Mollie O'Brien recorded Welch's “Orphan Girl” and “Wichita” on Away Out on the Mountain (1994), the first commercial release of her songwriting; Emmylou Harris's cover of “Orphan Girl” on Wrecking Ball (1995) introduced Welch to a wider audience.
- Revival (Almo Sounds, 1996) — produced by T Bone Burnett — was nominated for the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album and established the Welch-Rawlings two-guitar aesthetic.
- Hell Among the Yearlings (1998) continued with stark duo arrangements; Welch's clawhammer banjo became a signature.
- Time (The Revelator) (Acony, 2001) was the first release on her own Acony Records and is widely considered the duo's masterpiece, with Rolling Stone naming it one of the best albums of the 2000s.
- Welch served as associate producer on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack (2000) and sang on it — winning the Grammy for Album of the Year — introducing the duo's sound to a mass audience.
- Soul Journey (2003) experimented with drums and electric guitar; an eight-year gap followed.
- The Harrow & the Harvest (2011) was nominated for the Best Contemporary Folk Album Grammy; Welch won Americana Artist of the Year.
- Rawlings-credited releases that are effectively duo albums: A Friend of a Friend (2009, as Dave Rawlings Machine), Nashville Obsolete (2015), Poor David's Almanack (2017, dropping the Machine moniker; “Cumberland Gap” nominated for Best American Roots Song).
- All the Good Times (Are Past & Gone) (2020) — a home-recorded covers album made during the COVID lockdown — was the first release under both names and won the 2021 Grammy for Best Folk Album.
- The archival Boots series on Acony (Boots No. 1: The Official Revival Bootleg, 2016; Boots No. 2: The Lost Songs, 2020) released outtakes and previously unissued material from the vault.
- Woodland (2024) was the first album of new Welch-Rawlings originals since 2011; Welch became the first musician to receive UNC Chapel Hill's Thomas Wolfe Prize for Literature (2018).
