Soul Journey, released in 2003 on Acony Records, is Gillian Welch's third album and a deliberate departure from the bare-bones aesthetic of Hell Among the Yearlings and Time (The Revelator). Welch and David Rawlings handle vocals, guitars, and production, and bring in a fuller band — Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show on fiddle, Greg Leisz on Dobro, Jim Boquist on electric bass, Mark Ambrose on acoustic guitar, plus drums on several tracks. The arrangements are looser and more spontaneous than the duo's first two records. The album is also the first release on Acony, the label Welch and Rawlings founded themselves after the closure of Almo Sounds — a move that gave them full control over their catalog going forward.
