Music From the Revelator Collection

Gillian Welch

Ep · 2002

Music from the Revelator Collection is a download-only EP of eight live performances by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, issued on Acony Records in 2006. The tracks are the audio from the concert sections of the DVD The Revelator Collection, which Acony released on 12 November 2002 and which Mark Seliger filmed in black and white. Five songs were recorded at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, North Carolina, on 10 November 2001: “April the 14th,” “Wichita,” “Red Clay Halo,” “Billy” and “Pocahontas.” The other three, “Revelator,” “I’m on My Way Back to the Old Home” and “White Freightliner Blues,” were filmed the next day at the Bijou Theater in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Several songs come from Time (The Revelator), released in 2001, and “Wichita” was a Welch song that had not appeared on a record before. The set also includes four covers: Bob Dylan’s “Billy,” which Dylan wrote and recorded in 1973 for the film Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid; Neil Young’s “Pocahontas”; Bill Monroe’s “I’m on My Way Back to the Old Home,” with Rawlings singing lead; and Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freightliner Blues.” On the DVD, Welch plays a 1956 Gibson J-50 and Rawlings a 1935 Epiphone Olympic.
