Hello Operator... This Is Country Gazette, released by Flying Fish in 1991, is the band's retrospective compilation drawn from their five albums on the label between 1976 and 1988 — twenty-one tracks compiled by Alan Munde to gather some of the band's most characteristic work. Guests include Sam Bush on fiddle and David Grier on guitar. By the time Flying Fish issued the compilation, Country Gazette had moved through more than a decade of lineup changes with Munde and Roland White as the mainstays. The album functions as the canonical single-disc summary of Country Gazette's Flying Fish era — the years when the band had been one of the most consistently inventive progressive-bluegrass acts in California's broader country-rock circle.
