The Henhouse Prowlers’ self-titled album was released on 10 April 2007 on Slackjaw Records and recorded at Phantom Manor Studios in Chicago. The band was Brian Koehler on guitar, Ben Wright on banjo, Martin McWhorter on mandolin, Ryan Hinshaw on fiddle, James Weigel on resonator guitar and Jon Goldfine on bass, with Goldfine, Hinshaw, Wright and Weigel singing. The Prowlers had formed in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood in 2004.

Weigel wrote several of the fourteen tracks: “Ain’t It a Shame,” “Angel,” “Caroline,” “Syracuse” and “Tom Dundee.” The covers range widely: Fred Eaglesmith’s “Thirty Years of Farming,” Dallas Frazier and Earl Montgomery’s “California Cotton Fields,” Steve Earle’s “Carrie Brown,” Bill Monroe’s “Sittin’ Alone in the Moonlight,” Guy Clark’s “Homegrown Tomatoes” and the Lennon–McCartney song “Helter Skelter.” Two instrumentals, “Clinch Mountain Back Step” and the traditional “Grey Eagle,” are also included. Mike Lust engineered the album and Carl Saff mastered it.
