Highway Fifty Two (Vetco LP 3033, 1979) is the first album by Dave Evans and River Bend. Evans, a banjo player and tenor singer who grew up in Columbus, Ohio, had spent three years from 1972 with Larry Sparks and the Lonesome Ramblers before forming his own band in 1978. Vetco was a country and bluegrass label in Cincinnati, Ohio, founded in the late 1960s by Lou Ukelson, and it issued Evans’s first two albums with River Bend; Call Me Long Gone followed in 1980.

Four players are credited on the LP: Evans on banjo and guitar with lead vocals, Mike Hamilton on guitar with harmony vocals, Danny Cade on fiddle and harmonica, and Art Wydner on bass. Six of the eleven songs are credited to Evans, including “Highway 52” and “When the Snow Falls on My Foggy Mountain Home”; the rest include “Sun’s Gonna Shine,” credited to A. P. Carter, Flatt and Scruggs’s “Call Me on Home,” and the traditional “Short Life of Trouble” and “Barbara Allen.”
