Hiroshima Mon Amour

Peter Rowan

Album · 1979 · Better Days YX 7227-N

Hiroshima Mon Amour, released in 1979 on Japan's Better Days label and credited to Peter Rowan and the Red Hot Pickers (with Richard Greene), gathers recordings made at Nippon Columbia studios in Tokyo. The title song — a Rowan original imagining a love affair in the aftermath of the atomic bombing — would remain one of his most identifiable compositions; he would return to it on the 1993 Walls of Time album and again on Sugar Hill compilations of his work. The Tokyo sessions catch Rowan at his early-solo peak, with the Red Hot Pickers framing material that ranged from straight bluegrass to the cosmic-cowboy songwriting that defined his late-1970s catalog.
