Peter Rowan is one of bluegrass's most prolific and unconventional songwriters — a former Bill Monroe Blue Grass Boy whose career has moved easily between traditional bluegrass, rock, Tex-Mex, Buddhist chant, and Americana. Songs he wrote in Monroe's band and after (“Walls of Time,” “Panama Red,” “Midnight Moonlight,” “Land of the Navajo,” “Free Mexican Airforce”) have become part of the bluegrass and Americana canon.

  • Born in Wayland, Massachusetts. Grew up in a middle-class New England family; developed his interest in bluegrass as a teenager through the folk revival and Cambridge's Club 47 scene.
  • Studied at Colgate University briefly. Played in the Mother Bay State Entertainers and the Charles River Valley Boys in the early 1960s Boston folk scene.
  • Joined Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in 1964 at age 22 as lead singer and rhythm guitarist — one of the first college-educated Northern musicians Monroe ever hired. Stayed through 1967.
  • Co-wrote “Walls of Time” with Monroe — a Monroe-credited song that became a bluegrass standard.
  • Left Monroe in 1967. Formed the psychedelic folk-rock band Earth Opera with David Grisman; the group signed to Elektra and released two albums (1968–69).
  • Joined Seatrain with Richard Greene (also ex-Blue Grass Boys) in 1969. The band recorded on A&M and featured George Martin production; released three albums through 1973.
  • Formed Old and in the Way in 1973 with Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Vassar Clements, and John Kahn. The band's live recordings became one of the most influential bluegrass albums of the 1970s, introducing the genre to the rock generation.
  • “Panama Red” and “Midnight Moonlight” — both written during the Old and in the Way era — became signature Rowan songs. The New Riders of the Purple Sage had a hit with “Panama Red.”
  • Formed the Rowan Brothers with brothers Chris and Lorin in the mid-1970s, and over the years led many other projects, including Peter Rowan and the Wild Stallions.
  • Released more than 30 albums across six decades on labels including Flying Fish, Sugar Hill, and Compass.
  • Recorded two duo albums with Tony Rice — You Were There for Me (2004) and Quartet (2007) — and collaborated with cowboy singer Don Edwards. In recent decades he has led the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band.
  • Has received several Grammy nominations over his career, and sang on the 1997 Best Bluegrass Album winner, True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe.
  • Made a series of Buddhist-influenced recordings reflecting his long engagement with the practice.
  • Inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2022.
  • Continues to tour at 83 with multiple band configurations including the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band. Based in California.
