Peter Rowan with the Red Hot Pickers, released by Sugar Hill Records in 1995, gathers material from Rowan's 1979 sessions at Nippon Columbia studios in Tokyo — the recordings that had originally appeared on the Japanese Better Days releases Bluegrass Album and Hiroshima Mon Amour. The Red Hot Pickers — Richard Greene on fiddle, Tony Trischka on banjo, Andy Statman on mandolin, Roger Mason on bass — formed one of the most musically adventurous bands of Rowan's solo career, running through bluegrass, cosmic-cowboy, and original songwriting material in equal measure. The Sugar Hill reissue made the Tokyo recordings available to a broad American bluegrass audience for the first time.
