Peter Rowan with the Red Hot Pickers was issued by Sugar Hill Records in 1984 (SH-3733), with a British edition on Spindrift the same year. Its ten tracks were chosen from two albums Rowan had made for the Japanese label Better Days, Bluegrass Album and Hiroshima Mon Amour, the second of which came out in Japan in 1979. All of them were recorded at Nippon Columbia in Tokyo. Sugar Hill reissued the set on CD in 1995 (SHCD-3733).

Rowan sings lead and plays guitar, with Tony Trischka on banjo, Andy Statman on mandolin, Richard Greene on fiddle and Roger Mason on bass. Rowan, Greene and Hiroshi Asada produced the recordings, and Hiroshi Goto engineered and mixed them with Greene. For the American release the tapes were edited at Bias Recording in Springfield, Virginia, and mastered at Masterfonics in Nashville.

Five of the songs are credited as traditional: “Willow Garden,” “Wild Bill Jones,” “Come All Ye Tender Hearted,” “Oh Susanna” and “Rosalie McFall.” Alongside them are A. P. Carter’s “Jimmy Brown, the Newsboy,” Jack Bonus’s “Hobo Song,” “Old, Old House” by George Jones and Hal Bynum, Cy Coben’s “A Good Woman’s Love” and Rowan’s own “Hiroshima Mon Amour.” Four of the ten, the title song among them, also appear on the Japanese Hiroshima Mon Amour.
