Peter Rowan, the singer's self-titled debut solo album, was released by Flying Fish in 1978 with guests including his brother Lorin Rowan on piano, Flaco Jiménez on accordion, and fiddlers Tex Logan and Richard Greene. Rowan had come up through Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in the mid-1960s and then Old and In the Way with Jerry Garcia in the early 1970s; the solo album reaches across the genres those tenures had introduced him to — straight country, Tex-Mex border music, bluegrass, and the cosmic-cowboy songwriting that would become his signature. Tracks like The Free Mexican Airforce, Land of the Navajo, and Panama Red announced openly the territory Rowan would explore for the rest of his career.
