Earl Scruggs: His Family and Friends, released by Columbia in October 1971 (C 30584), is the soundtrack to the documentary of the same name — a film and album celebrating Scruggs's transition from the Foggy Mountain Boys into the Earl Scruggs Revue with his sons Randy and Gary, and his openness to the rock-and-folk world that the late 1960s had brought to bluegrass. The sessions, recorded in various locations including the Scruggs home, gather appearances by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Doc Watson, and the Byrds alongside the new Revue lineup. The cross-generational meetings the documentary stages were one of the cultural moments of the bluegrass-meets-rock era, and the album is the closest record of how the music sounded.
