Home of the Red Fox, released by Rebel Records in 1987 (Reb-1651), is Bill Emerson's all-instrumental banjo showcase — ten tunes Emerson wrote or co-wrote, performed with one of the most stacked sideman lineups of the era: Tony Rice on guitar, Jimmy Gaudreau on mandolin, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Jim Buchanan on fiddle, and Mark Schatz on bass, with Emerson producing at Webco Studio in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Emerson had been part of the original Country Gentlemen and the broader Washington-area progressive bluegrass scene; the album captures his mature banjo style — a tasteful blend of melodic and single-string ideas grafted onto the Scruggs foundation — at full strength.
