Home of the Red Fox (Rebel REB 1651) was released in 1987 and is Bill Emerson’s all-instrumental banjo album: ten tunes that he wrote or co-wrote, recorded at Webco Studio in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Tony Rice plays guitar, Jimmy Gaudreau mandolin, Jerry Douglas dobro, Jim Buchanan fiddle and Mark Schatz bass.

Four of the tracks are remakes of tunes Emerson had recorded earlier. “Theme Time,” written with Jimmy Martin and Paul Williams, and “Sweet Dixie,” written with Martin, date from his time with Martin’s Sunny Mountain Boys in the early and middle 1960s; “Cowboys and Indians” and “Welcome to New York,” the latter written with Doyle Lawson, were first recorded with the Country Gentlemen, of which Emerson was a charter member in 1957. The newer pieces include the title tune, “Old Times in Virginia,” “Appalachiana” and “Stonewall Country.”
