Home was released by Rounder Records on 27 September 2019. It is Billy Strings’s second solo studio album, after Turmoil & Tinfoil (2017), and the first on Rounder, which he joined in June 2019. His band here is Jarrod Walker on mandolin, Billy Failing on banjo and Royal Masat on bass, with Strings on guitar and vocals and, on some tracks, banjo. Glenn Brown, who recorded, mixed and mastered it, co-produced with Strings. The sleeve notes list recording at Blackbird Studio D and Southern Ground Studios in Nashville, with additional recording, mixing and mastering at GBP Studios in East Lansing, Michigan.
Every titled song is credited to Strings, most with a co-writer: Jon Weisberger on “Taking Water,” “Running,” “Away from the Mire,” “Hollow Heart” and “Love Like Me”; Aaron Allen on “Must Be Seven” and “Watch It Fall”; Ronnie and Heaven McCoury on “Highway Hypnosis”; Jarrod Walker on “Everything’s the Same”; and Lindsay Lou on “Freedom.” Molly Tuttle sings with him on “Must Be Seven,” Megan Campbell sings on the title track, and Jerry Douglas plays dobro on “Love Like Me” and “Everything’s the Same.” John Mailander plays violin on seven of the tracks, and Glenn Brown adds synthesizer, vibraphone, harmonium and other instruments to several. The title track also has a string arrangement by Brown, with Christian Sedelmyer on violin and viola and Kaitlyn Raitz on cello.
Home reached number one on Billboard’s Bluegrass Albums chart, the first of his studio albums to do so, and won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in March 2021.
