“Everything’s the Same” is an original song by guitarist and singer Billy Strings, written in a deliberately traditional bluegrass style. It appeared on “Home,” his second solo studio album, released by Rounder Records in 2019.
The lyric turns on a touring musician’s observation that places start to blur together — that no matter how far the road carries him, the towns, the rooms, and the routine come to feel much the same. It is a modern sentiment dressed in the older bluegrass language of restlessness and the longing for home, and the band frames it with the brisk, hard-driving sound of classic bluegrass rather than the more exploratory jams Strings is also known for.
“Home” was widely praised and reached number one on the bluegrass albums chart, part of the run that pushed Strings from a respected young picker toward the front rank of the music. “Everything’s the Same,” issued as an advance track ahead of the album, has remained a fixture of his recordings and live shows.
