House Down the Block was released in January 2004 on Rebel Records (REB-CD 1798). It was the first of four albums that Kenny and Amanda Smith made for Rebel, and it followed the couple’s win of the IBMA Emerging Artist award in 2003. They had met at a Lonesome River Band concert during Kenny Smith’s six-year stint with that group.
Kenny Smith’s guitar and Amanda Smith’s vocals are at the front, with Ronald Inscore on mandolin, Greg Martin on bass and Steve Huber on banjo. The thirteen songs come from several writers, among them Becky Buller and Tim Stafford, and Kenny Smith contributed some of his own material. Two of them, “Big Ball in Boston” and “Stay a Little Longer,” are tunes usually associated with the western swing bandleader Bob Wills. The album also includes “House Down the Block,” “Song for Emily” and “Where Love Went Wrong.”
