“Stay a Little Longer” is a Western swing number written by Bob Wills and his longtime vocalist Tommy Duncan. Wills and his Texas Playboys recorded it in the mid-1940s, and it became one of the band’s enduring dance pieces.
The song is built for motion. Over a fast, driving beat the lyric runs through a string of rhymed couplets, each a quick joke or scrap of fiddle-tune nonsense, all circling back to the title’s plea for a dance partner to stay a little longer. There is no real story, only momentum and good humor.
The tune crossed readily into bluegrass, where its breakneck tempo and trading of instrumental breaks made it a natural showpiece. The version heard here is by Jim and Jesse and the Virginia Boys, who recorded it for their 1965 album “Y’all Come!”
