Hylo Brown Sings Folk Songs of Rural America (Rural Rhythm RRHB 176) was released in June 1967. Its twenty tracks were recorded that year in Akron, Ohio, with Lee Sutton and Mac Wiseman as producers. Brown sings and plays guitar, with Jack Casey on lead guitar, Ross Branham on banjo, John Maultteay on fiddle, Dan Milton on dobro and Dick Brickles on bass.
The songs are traditional and popular folk and country titles, among them “Girl in the Blue Velvet Band,” “Little John Henry,” “Down in the Willow Garden,” “This Train,” “Black Jack Davey” and “Froggie Went a Courtin’,” along with “All the Good Times Are Past and Gone” and “I’ll Remember Your Love in My Prayers.” Brown is the vocalist on every track.
Frank “Hylo” Brown Jr. was born in Johnson County, Kentucky, in 1922. He recorded for Capitol from 1954 and joined Flatt & Scruggs on their Martha White Mills shows in 1957. After Capitol he signed with Starday in 1961, and he made a run of LPs for Rural Rhythm in 1967 and 1968.
