Hymns of the Cross (King 918) was released by King Records in 1964. The twelve songs were recorded at King Studio in Cincinnati on 1 and 2 April 1964, with Carter Stanley on guitar and lead vocals, Ralph Stanley on banjo, George Shuffler on guitar and Earl Taylor on mandolin. On most songs Carter sings lead, Ralph the tenor part and Shuffler the baritone; on “I Just Dropped By,” Shuffler takes the tenor, and “Oh Death” credits both brothers with the lead.

The program includes “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” “Beautiful Star of Bethlehem,” “John Three-Sixteen,” “Jesus Savior, Pilot Me” and “How Beautiful Heaven Must Be,” along with two Carter Stanley compositions, “Shoutin’ on the Hills of Glory” and, with Paul Mullins, “No Burdens Pass Through.” “He’s Passing This Way” and “John Three-Sixteen” were also issued as King singles. Carter Stanley died on 1 December 1966, more than two and a half years after the sessions.
