I Believe in the Old Time Way is a gospel album by the Traditional Grass, the Ohio band that banjoist Joe Mullins started with his father, fiddler Paul Mullins, and led from 1983 to 1995. Rebel Records issued it in 1993. Its fourteen songs were recorded in a single day, 21 September 1991, at Rivertracks Studio in Louisa, Kentucky.
Mark Rader plays guitar and sings lead; Joe Mullins plays banjo and sings tenor; Gerald Evans Jr. plays mandolin, and fiddle on some songs, and sings bass or baritone; Paul Mullins plays fiddle; and Mike Clevenger plays bass. On the title song, written by Charlie Moore and Bill Napier, Rader leads with Mullins on tenor and Evans on the low part, and most of the other songs are sung by all three. The writers include Evans (“A Gospel Light” and, with Rick May, “Elijah”), Paul Mullins (“My Loved Ones Are Waiting for Me”), Don Reno and Red Smiley (“Family Altar”) and Ira and Charlie Louvin (“You’ll Be Rewarded Over There”).
