I'm Gonna Sing Sing Sing offers Jim and Jesse and the Virginia Boys in late-career gospel mode, the territory the brothers returned to repeatedly across their long partnership. By 1990 the McReynolds brothers had been recording together for nearly four decades, and the close family blend — Jim's high tenor against Jesse's rich lower harmony — had taken on the patina of long familiarity. Jesse's crosspicked mandolin remains the band's signature instrument, his technique unchanged in its essentials since he developed it in the 1950s. The Virginia Boys provide the unobtrusive ensemble work the songs require. The repertoire draws on Southern gospel and shape-note material the brothers had been singing since boyhood in Coeburn, Virginia. Sitting deep in their Opry-tenure period, the album is one of many catalog entries documenting the brothers' steady, undemonstrative commitment to the gospel side of their work.
