In Memory of the Man: Dedicated to Lester Flatt (Folkways FTS 31073, 1980) is Red Allen’s tribute to Lester Flatt, who died in Nashville on 11 May 1979. Allen, born in Kentucky in 1930, had made an album for Folkways in 1964. The twelve tracks of the tribute were recorded in October 1979 at Scruggs’ Sound Studio in Nashville.

Allen and his son Harley Allen Jr. play guitar, with Marty Stuart on mandolin, Tater Tate on fiddle, Gene Wooten on dobro, Pete Corum on bass and, on most tracks, Kenny Ingram on banjo; Blake Williams plays banjo on “I’ll Take the Blame.” Red Allen sings lead on seven of the twelve and Harley Allen Jr. on the rest, with Curly Seckler singing tenor on eleven. The songs include several Flatt wrote or co-wrote: “I’ll Never Shed Another Tear,” “Why Don’t You Tell Me So,” “My Darlin’s Last Goodbye” and, with Everett Lilly, “Over the Hill to the Poorhouse.” “Somehow Tonight” is credited to Earl Scruggs.
