James (2010) is Red Molly’s second studio album, after Love and Other Tragedies (2008), and the first the trio produced themselves. It was self-released and made the top five of the US Americana radio chart. It was the last album to feature the original trio of Abbie Gardner, Carolann Solebello and Laurie MacAllister: Solebello left in June 2010, and Molly Venter replaced her.

Solebello plays guitar, MacAllister on banjo, and Gardner on dobro and lap steel; Gardner has said she played lap steel for the first time on this record. Jake Armerding plays mandolin and fiddle, Mike Weatherly bass and Ben Wittman percussion, and Gardner’s father, Herb Gardner, plays piano. Fred Gillen Jr. sings a duet with MacAllister on “Gulf Coast Highway.”

Gardner wrote “Jezebel” and “Troubled Mind.” “Falling In” is by Armerding, “The Last Call” by Anthony da Costa and “Can’t Let Go” by Randy Weeks; other writers credited include Gillian Welch (“Tear My Stillhouse Down”) and Darrell Scott (“You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive”), and “Foreign Lander” is traditional. The title refers to the James of Richard Thompson’s “1952 Vincent Black Lightning,” the song that gave the band its name; Gardner has described James as “kind of a composite character.”
