Rural Rhythm Presents Jim Eanes with Red Smiley & the Bluegrass Cutups, released in 1968 on Uncle Jim O'Neal's Rural Rhythm label, was the first of two Eanes albums for the imprint. The 20-song program was produced by Lee Sutton and featured Red Smiley's vocals and guitar with his Bluegrass Cut-Ups — Billy Edwards on banjo, Clarence "Tater" Tate on fiddle, Gene Burris on mandolin and guitar, John Palmer on bass, and special guest Peggy Peterson on dobro. The pairing brought together two southern-Virginia regional figures who had been working radio and festival circuits in parallel; the album sits among the steady stream of bluegrass material Rural Rhythm released for the budget-rack audience through the late 1960s.
