Rural Rhythm Presents Jim Eanes with Red Smiley & the Bluegrass Cutups was released in 1968 (Rural Rhythm RRJE 197). Jim Eanes sings lead on the vocal tracks with Red Smiley on tenor and guitar, backed by Smiley’s Cut-Ups: Billy Edwards on banjo, Gene Burrows on guitar and mandolin, Clarence “Tater” Tate on fiddle and John Palmer on bass, with Peggy Peterson on Dobro. The sessions are listed as Canton, Ohio, in 1968, and Lee Sutton produced.

Rural Rhythm was founded in 1955 by “Uncle” Jim O’Neal, who put twenty songs on each LP; this one has twenty, most of them under two and a half minutes. Eanes wrote two of them, “There’ll Come a Time” and “Budded Roses.” Others include “Molly Darling,” “Time Changes Everything,” “Lover’s Lane,” “Carolina Sunshine Girl” and Charlie Moore’s “Broken Engagement.” The instrumentals are “Gambling Polka Dot Blues” and “Sally Goodin.” Eanes had been working with Smiley and the Cut-Ups in the late 1960s.
