John Hartford Fiddles Wild Hog in the Red Brush (and a Bunch of Others You Might Not Have Heard) (Rounder Records, 1996) is an archival fiddle album by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist John Hartford, built around old Southern contest fiddle tunes and obscure dance music that Hartford had collected and performed throughout his career. Hartford plays fiddle; Bob Carlin plays banjo and produced the sessions; Mike Compton plays mandolin; Ronnie McCoury plays guitar; and Jerry McCoury plays bass. The album documents Hartford's lifelong commitment to fiddle music as a living tradition rather than a period artifact, presenting unadorned performances of tunes few listeners would encounter elsewhere. It stands alongside Hartford's other late-career archival work as evidence of the deep investment in the folk-fiddle world that underlay his more famous identity as a songwriter.
