Just for the Record was released by Rounder in 1993 (Rounder CD 0306) and was produced by Ken Irwin, with liner notes by Peter Cronin. The Dry Branch Fire Squad, led by Ron Thomason, recorded it at Sound Space in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Dry Branch Fire Squad had been recording for Rounder since 1981; Thomason founded the band in 1976.

The lineup is Thomason on mandolin and lead vocals, with lead guitar on a few tracks; Suzanne Thomas on guitar, with lead guitar on several tracks, banjo on “Unwed Fathers,” and lead vocals on two songs; Dan Russell on banjo and steel guitar, singing bass; Charlie Leet on bass, singing baritone; and Mary Jo Leet on high baritone and tenor vocals. Stuart Duncan plays fiddle and Kathy Chiavola sings harmony on one track, “Why Do We Keep Holding On to a Heartache?”

Gospel pieces include “Church by the Road,” “The God That Never Fails” and the Carter Family’s “A Distant Land to Roam.” Suzanne Thomas sings John Prine’s “Unwed Fathers,” and the fourteen tracks also include “Midnight on the Stormy Deep,” “Sugar Tree Ridge” and Jim Rushing’s “Carolyn at the Broken Wheel Inn.”
