Keepers, subtitled A Live Recording, is Guy Clark’s 1997 album for Sugar Hill, cut before an audience in Nashville with the band he was touring at the time: Verlon Thompson on guitar and harmony, Darrell Scott on guitar, mandolin, dobro and Weissenborn, his son Travis Clark on bass, Suzi Ragsdale on accordion and harmony, and Kenny Malone on drums. The fifteen songs are a retrospective of the catalog, from “L.A. Freeway” and “Texas 1947” through “Homegrown Tomatoes” and “Let Him Roll,” closing with a nearly six-minute “Desperados Waiting for a Train.” Produced by Clark with engineer Miles Wilkinson, it stands as the definitive document of Clark as a performer rather than a writer for others.
