Like Father Like Son cover

Like Father, Like Son was recorded by Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys on 14 or 15 December 1989 at Maggard Sound Studio in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. It first came out on cassette, and Copper Creek later issued it on CD (CCCD 0110). The band was Stanley on banjo, Sammy Adkins on guitar and vocals, Junior Blankenship on lead guitar, Ernie Thacker on mandolin, Curly Ray Cline on fiddle and Jack Cooke on bass.

The album is credited to Ralph Stanley and Ralph Stanley II, who was then about 11 and sings lead on “Haunted House” and plays lead guitar on “Wildwood Flower”; it was his first studio recording. Adkins sings lead on Vern Gosdin’s “Way Down Deep,” and the program also includes Don Reno and Red Smiley’s “Long Gone,” two Bill Monroe songs (“My Little Georgia Rose” and “My Rose of Old Kentucky”), the traditional “Wolfe County,” and three songs by Earl Sykes and Ralph Stanley: “Two Flowers Blooming,” “Breaks of the Cumberland” and “Dirty Black Coal.” Stanley and his son re-recorded “Dirty Black Coal” for the 2013 album Side By Side.
