Live at Kansas State, released by Columbia in June 1972, captures the Earl Scruggs Revue on the college-circuit touring run that had become the band's primary working environment — twelve tracks performed at Kansas State University, a venue that typified the audience Scruggs had been seeking since launching the Revue. The repertoire mixes the new Revue's electric-and-acoustic blend (T for Texas, Bound in Jail All Night Long, You Ain't Going Nowhere) with material from Scruggs's bluegrass past, including a closing Foggy Mountain Breakdown that locates the new band's lineage. With Randy and Gary Scruggs and Vassar Clements among the players, the album is one of the earliest live documents of how the Revue's translation of bluegrass for college audiences actually sounded.
